Direct Mail, otherwise known as sending letters through the post to prospective customers is now pretty much a dying art. By many business owners, sending letters has been replaced by emails – can’t say I blame them really. After all, emails are cheaper, quicker and you can see who has opened it and read it. Why wouldn’t you use emails?
But, there are still some business owners who do use direct mail as a marketing technique. The school of thought on this one is that since everyone else uses email, their letter might just get read.
And..you know what…that’s not a bad thought really. Their letter is more likely to get read by their prospective customer. But it’s still not likely to get acted upon if it’s boring to read or there is no indication of what happens next.
So, if you are going to send a letter out to your potential customers, how can you make sure that someone reading it does take action?
Well, as with anything else that you write, you need to put yourself in your potential customer’s shoes and think about what problems, frustrations and issues they have about your product or service. What keeps them up at night? What problems are they trying to solve when they buy from you?
Once you know the answers to these questions, you can start to put together your first draft. Sit your imaginary customer down on the sofa next to you and write as if you’re talking to them.
First ask them some questions. You want to know that if your customer answers yes to these questions, your company is the right one for them.
Then tell them what the problem is – you know what their problems are from doing your research before you started writing (you have done that haven’t you?) Again, right as if you’re talking to them and just confirming that the problems you think they have are the ones you can solve.

Book signing tours use to be a regular part of the publishing industry. Authors expected to sign a deal, get an advance and then prepare for a tour. Some tours, those of the reigning literary superstars, had a glamorous side; for most they were a bit of a grind and a part of the road warrior aspect of trying to sell books.
But book tours are going the way of the LP in the music industry. They are still there, but they’re becoming scarcer. It’s a shame, because book tours are more important than many realize. They are about making connections with individual stores, store owners and managers. Even those inevitable signings that end up with barely a handful of people in the audience can be beneficial, if a relationship is forged between the writer and a bookseller. But now independents are falling by the wayside and the large chains are doing all that they can to simply survive. As with the music industry, the Internet has set the publishing industry on its head. Stores and chains are failing as more books are being bought and sold online. As with all types of intellectual property, book sales are being hit hard. The model that worked so well only a few years ago, is now broken.
The downside is that the days of generous advances, full-blown PR campaigns and multi-city book tours is pretty much a thing of the past, except for a very select few. Still as the old model begins to falter, new opportunities are surfacing. For authors who take their careers and their works into their own hands there is a new world of opportunity out there.

The Internet has impacted all of the arts, but no sector has been hit quite as hard as the music industry. With CD sales fading and radio play shrinking, recording artists are finding less opportunities to get their music heard. To survive, many musicians are becoming brands in the service of brands. The industry is in such a free fall that advertising avenues are filling the shoes that music labels once did. During most of rock’s history melding music in the service of a product was anathema. But this is a very different world; in the past musicians and record labels could make a good living off of selling records and CDs. An artist didn’t have to sell his or her music to an advertiser or TV show to turn a profit. But with the advent of Napster and subsequent sites, the days of platinum and double platinum record sales are quickly fading.
Now most bands make their money off of touring, merchandising and yes, melding their music with products. Lady GaGa’s Bad Romance is a product placement wet dream come true. The video is filled with brands galore. But she’s not the only one going down that road; everyone from Iggy Pop to Velvet Revolver to Depeche Mode has cut deals with products and brands. Although Steve Jobs helped to put some life back into music with iTunes as a way to generate revenue, it’s a far cry from where things stood in the ‘60s, ‘70s, or ‘80s. As the industry shifts, artists have to rethink their approach and their career paths.
The downside is that labels are no longer there with the famed A&R reps grabbing bands off the streets and turning them into stars (not that it was ever that common an occurrence to begin with).

When should one begin the planning for the sale of your business? It has been said that that thought process should begin when you start your business. So Entrepreneurs, while in the initial throes and excitement of the planning stages of starting a new venture, it is also appropriate to broach the subject of exit strategy. Too often the daily process of running and growing the business disallows the consideration of an exit strategy. A study conducted Sept.09 (as printed below) revealed that 75% of small business owners do not have an exit plan.
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ – The California Association of Business Brokers (CABB, a non profit trade organization) says that there is one thing that most small business owners fail to do when preparing to sell their business: have an exit strategy in place. A recently reported study conducted by Harris Interactive found that among those small business owners surveyed, three out of four small business owners did not have an exit plan developed.
An Exit strategy may be transitioning your business to family members, a planned merger, a planned closure, a planned sale of your business, or other possibilities. The below is focused on issues related to the planned sale of your business.
How NOT to Consider an Exit Strategy:

In the fifteen years I have been working with sales teams I have consistently found that price objections are still one of the most commonly requested programs. In today’s commodity-driven world it is easy to fall prey to discounting your product or service in an effort to capture the sale. However, there is a better way to deal with the dreaded price objection.
First, make sure that you invest sufficient time at the front end of the sales process learning about your prospects’ current situation, problems, concerns, goals and objectives. Although this sounds basic and fundamental, my experience has taught me that too many sales people skate through this process so they can ‘pitch’ their product or service. Unfortunately, this is one of the reasons they encounter price objections.
Demonstrate the value of your product, service or solution. I know, I know, you’ve heard this before. However, I still want to challenge you on this. Chances are you spend the first five to fifteen minutes of your sales presentation telling people why they should buy from you or giving them background on your company. This approach is one of the LEAST effective ways to demonstrate your value. If you truly want to accomplish this then you need to tailor EVERY sales presentation so that it addresses the key issues your prospect is facing. Here are two simple steps that will help you modify your approach your presentation.
Step 1: Start every sales presentation or proposal with summary. This summary must highlight their issues, concerns and situation. Focus your attention on demonstrating that you clearly understand their problem, the impact of that problem on their business, the implications of not addressing the problem, and the value to your prospect and his/her company when the problem is solved. This does not mean talking about your product! You are not actually presenting your solution yet.

Do or do not, there is no try. - Yoda
Energy is the essence of life. Everyday you choose how you are going to use it by knowing what you want and what it takes to reach that goal, and by maintaining focus. Ever find yourself wasting a lot of time and money without achieving great results. Did you start your business so excited that you ran on pure adrenaline? Were you ready to conquer the world and targeted everyone?
Imagine it is one year from today. The last twelve months have been absolutely amazing. With hindsight, you realize how much time was wasted by not taking the time to find where your strengths and weakness were.
Most business owners experience significant advantages in focusing their marketing efforts towards a particular set of clients. The truly exceptional business owners are the ones who take a strategy with which they are comfortable and really know inside and out. They implement these strategies and then make them systematic. Outrageous business owners, entrepreneurs, and leaders know that by creating systems, they create more time to learn about themselves and new strategies, evolve themselves, and create better systems.
No business can possibly expect to be all things to all people, and any that try will likely find business dwindling due to others who specialize to better meet the needs of that customer segment. Each segment has its own set of common characteristics and unique needs and preferences. The rationale for choosing your playing field is that if you focus on a particular group who understands and values your expertise, product, or service, you can become well recognized as a big fish in a small pond. And, because you know their particular challenges, the solutions they are looking for, the lingo, and habits of your target niche, you can focus your marketing efforts and achieve better returns for a given marketing effort.

“Cherish your visions and your dreams as they are the children of your soul; the blue prints of your ultimate achievements.” Napoleon Hill
What is your dream? You may want an entirely new job or a significant career change. Maybe you are seeking a promotion, or believe you deserve a raise! Perhaps you desire to start your own business.
Sometimes you ignore your own dreams because of self-doubt, fear, or external complications. You can think of many different excuses to brush those dreams aside. Your world will become more exciting and you will begin to live a more passionate and meaningful life, if you go after your dreams.
Our media is only too happy to supply us with stories of individuals who overcame tragedy, serious illness, and emotional upheaval to achieve success regardless of these obstacles. Though seemingly an inspiration, these stories also convey a paradoxical message: these miracles are indeed extraordinary and may seem out of the reach of ordinary people.
It is my experience, when I speak with leaders in any field or read biographies, that each finds he is doing what he does because he has a sense of values and purpose that drives him. What do you need in order to have an extraordinary life, miracles each day, and your dreams come true? The first step is to get a rough idea of where you are now, and then begin to develop the vision of where you want to go. Clarity, focus, strategy and then action are paramount in your life, career, or business. Most want to start with the action, first.

Most companies develop action plans for what they consider the nuts-and-bolts part of their business, including production, sales, distribution, etc. It’s surprising how few companies automatically throw marketing into that mix. This is particularly true when it comes to small or mid-sized companies. Many entrepreneurs and business owners think of marketing as an extra, an afterthought, something to focus on when there is extra money to spend on incidentals. The truth is that for a company to be successful (first and foremost) marketing matters. It is a business essential. The question should never be if a company should market, but how.
The good news is that businesses now have more options than ever. It used to be that direct marketing, traditional advertising and PR, were the holy trinity in marketing. Along with some basic grassroots guerrilla approaches, those three were considered the only viable options. The internet has changed everything. The new marketing arsenal now includes social media, blogging, email marketing, article marketing, pay-per-click, video marketing, Adwords… the list goes on.
But this does not mean that there is now an either/or approach to marketing. The correct question is not: should a company launch a traditional public relations campaign or a social media campaign? Rather, how does a company effectively meld a PR campaign with a social media, blogging approach?
To launch an effective campaign, a business first needs to develop a clear message, create a strong brand and define its target market. The next step is to develop a strong marketing approach and marketing plan. The plan needs to be a living breathing, fluid approach that can shift and change as the market changes. Each business has different needs. But a plan is a necessity.

I recently received a call from a prospective client who had recently appeared on Oprah and was looking for ways to continue and grow his media placements and build his public relations campaign. That was one smart, savvy business owner. Most people view Oprah as the summit, as the end of the line media-wise. Granted, at least through the end of this year, Oprah will remain one of the prime jewels, when it comes to media coverage. For the last decade it seems as though every client and prospect has lead with one question – “when can you get me on Oprah?”
She created a media juggernaut, the likes of which we’ve rarely seen. Still, even for those clients we did book on Oprah, the show was only one step in their overall media campaign. The purpose of PR is not to gain one media hit, but to create a sustained ongoing media presence. It could be a TV segment, or a magazine or newspaper article; still other times it could be coverage in a blog or a social media site.
It is the combination of media coverage that creates an effective public relations campaign. It is not about one placement, even if that placement is on Oprah or the Today Show. Those types of media hits only truly fulfill their purpose if they end up generating more media coverage. Often a media hit in a huge outlet such as Oprah will result in an avalanche of call and enquiries for a couple of weeks, but the response will then start to rapidly fade. We once placed a client on a national TV segment that generated in the neighborhood of half a million calls in a couple of weeks. The response was astounding. But as with anything else, if the campaign had stopped there, eventually so would the calls.
