3 Work-life Balance Tips For Small Business Owners

As a small business owner, you understandably want to put forth all of your effort into making your business venture a success. After all, you may have your personal financial resources at stake in your company as well as your professional reputation. Your family’s livelihood and financial well-being coupled with your ability to plan for a better tomorrow may also be wrapped up in the success of your company. While it is easy to work seemingly non-stop six or even seven days a week for your small business, the fact is that finding a balance between work and your personal life is better for your own well-being, your personal relationships and even the success of your company. There are a few tips that you can follow to ensure success for your small business.

1. Create a Work Schedule, and Follow It
It is easy to work on activities that have no real positive gain for your company, and this ultimately can leave you treading water without moving forward. Successful small business owners often create a work schedule for themselves on a daily basis as well as a weekly or monthly basis. By doing so, you will be able to focus your time and energy on tasks that are truly important to your company. More than that, you can schedule personal time with family and friends or even downtime for yourself so that you can recharge. After all, taking time away from work to relax and unwind periodically will allow you to return to work less stressed and better able to focus on your small business.

2. Delegate and Reorganize Responsibilities
One of the common mistakes that small business owners make relates to trying to do all of the work for their small business themselves. Some may have limited financial resources to outsource or to hire in-house employees. Others may simply believe that they will get the work done right if they do it themselves. However, the fact is that very few individuals are great at everything. Because of this, you may find yourself spinning your wheels or wasting valuable time trying to accomplish tasks that you are not trained to do. Perhaps you also do this with menial tasks that another person could easily handle for you. By passing off tasks that require too much time or that others could do for you, you can free up valuable time for your personal life as well as to focus on more important tasks that truly demand the business owner’s attention.

3. Focus on the Task At Hand
If you regularly find yourself spending significantly more time to complete certain tasks than you had planned for or that you believe the tasks should have taken, you may have an issue with focus. As a business owner, it is easy for your attention to be diverted into multiple directions through normal business activities, but it may also be diverted by your personal life. The kids may be complaining to you that you missed their big game at school, and this can leave you feeling distracted. You may have missed your morning workout, and this may leave you feel frazzled and stressed. When you give each activity or relationship that you prioritize in your work and personal life the attention it deserves and when you focus fully on what is going on in front of you, you may find that you can more easily move on to the next task with better focus and clarity.

Few people will deny that small business owners are truly busy people, and there may be a feeling that you have to do it all in order to be successful. However, it is far better for you personally and for your business to create a balance between your work and personal life. By adopting some of these valuable tips, you can more easily structure the balance that would benefit you.

Great article Jim on a central subject for successful living. Very hard to do I must say until I found a great book and game changer called, “System Busters: How to stop them in your business.”I was excited to learn about the fully integrated management and organizational systems for any small company. It’s designed to maximize the business owner’s time, increase productivity and reduce waste and stress. I’ve learned since many cutting edge businesses are using it.
