How To Buy A Health Club / Gym Business

The wellness industry is a very large industry in today’s market.  There are many opportunities to buy a gym or even buy a health club.  There is an excellent opportunity to make a large profit on your initial investment when you find a good gym business for sale.  There are a few things that you should keep in mind though prior to your purchase.

Location of the Facility
Is the gym or health club located in an ideal area?  For example, a club that is located near a number of residences will increase the number of potential members.  Likewise, a club that is located near a business park will attract employees of the park during lunch hours.  It is important to look at the location of the facility to determine how much potential traffic the company can receive.

Amenities of the Facility
What types of amenities does the facility offer to its clients?  With so many different gyms and health clubs available for consumers, it is important that a gym for sale offer more then just a few items of workout equipment.  Facilities should have showers, lockers, plenty of parking, well lit areas for after dark, hot tubs and even swimming pools.  These are amenities that many people look for in nicer health clubs and gyms.  The more amenities that the facility offers, the better chances you will have for making a large return on your investment.

Services of the Facility
Just as amenities are important for success if you buy a gym for sale, the different types of services offered by the facility are equally as important.  Members want to be catered to and know that they are getting the most for their membership money.  Facilities that offer a large variety of classes for members such as Pilates, yoga, high impact cardio workouts, low impact cardio workouts, body trainers, personal fitness trainers, nutritionists, child care and more will have a higher rate of success than facilities that do not offer these types of services.
Members need and want variety for their money.  Additionally, members will renew memberships if their health plans and fitness plans are successful.  If a member feels and sees the results of a successful plan, they are going to renew their membership and continue with their routines, training and participation.  Membership renewal is the quickest and strongest method to see a profit on your investment because there is literally no advertising, recruiting new members or anything else.  Established memberships are the bread and butter when you buy a health club or gym business.

Membership Contracts
Often people are under the misconception that locking a person into a membership contract is the most efficient method for developing a steady stream of income for the business.  While this does force people to continue paying even if they are not utilizing the membership any longer, it does not promote established memberships or renewal memberships.  In fact, if you encourage members to pay as they visit the facility monthly or annually, instead of requiring them to sign a two year or longer contact many people will remain with the facility longer and become established members.
If you offer discounts for paying memberships that are longer, such as annual membership discount people will see the savings and be more likely to purchase a longer membership instead of monthly memberships. Members will not be required to purchase the annual membership or be locked in but will voluntarily purchase it to save the extra money. They will have paid for the year long membership to receive the discount.  Having already paid, they are more likely to remain with the facility to get their money’s worth.

Before setting a gym business, you must first explore the area if it is near the city and lots of people pass by around the are. You must make sure that you have the new equipment and complete employees to handle the business. Be sure that “safety first” is highlighted in the gym.
