Management & Human Resources

People often mistake by relating the term ‘Management’ with HR. Which I feel is not absolutely true. Management means managing, like how a HR Manager manages its employees, a Sales Manager manages its Sales, a finance manager manages flow of funds and an account manager manages its firm’s accounts. Management teaches the ways to manage things well, sometimes one thing at one time and sometimes requires multi-tasking, take an example. An employee is very disturbed due to some reasons and misbehaved with many of his seniors, its HR manager’s job to handle him. The better he handles the man, the better he has learnt the term ‘management’.

The other terms, management means the most senior staff of an organization i.e. Chairman, Director, C.E.O. or Board of Directors etc. In such a case, the managerial staff is treated as representative of the senior management.

In terms of HR, management study teaches how to know different human beings, how to recognize their needs, how to persuade them to perform better and also to understand what make them feel good and happy. Almost every company is turning its side to HR department, and expecting their HR professionals to prepare its employees to perform best and give the positive results. But, this is not possible unless the problems and issues of an employee are resolved. To understand what’s going in the employee’s mind, what he wants, and what is troubling him, HR Department should try its best skills. I feel if an employee has had a bad start of the day, his whole day will be ruined and in the same manner, if he is having a bad evening, his rest of the day will be not good. Thus, HR Department should help the employee to make balance in his personal and professional lives.

Why I am only discussing HR is because, if an employee’s all problems are resolved and all the HR processes or strategies such as induction, motivation, and training are adopted properly, the half of the game is already won. Employees will perform better if an aim or target is set for them. They need to be guided accordingly for the achievement of that aim or target. It’s an HR quote that most satisfied employee gives the more satisfying results to the management.

Most of the organizations in India, still don’t treat their employees as assets, the HR Department is also felt as a huge expense for the organization. But this scenario is changing and won’t take long for change.

In my career, I have learnt to understand human beings and their needs, wants, problems, and solutions to their problems. I have learnt the following important things about employees of the most Indian organizations:

  1. They are sensitive thus need to be handled very carefully.
  2. They are important thus should be given importance.
  3. They deserve better pay, benefits and better working environment.
  4. They need to be trained time to time.
  5. They need to be motivated and persuaded to perform better.
  6. Better employee should be recognized and rewarded.
  7. They should not be insulted in public.
  8. They need to be cared time to time.
  9. They need to be appraised for better performance or a good cause.
  10. They need to be heard (for suggestions) and also given a chance of speaking.
  11. They need recreation, which can be done through get-together and picnics etc.

In most of the company, when HR Department is working efficiently, despite this management doesn’t cooperate and as a result of which, employees start leaving the organization. Take an example, “On walking into the factory, the MD noticed a young man leaning against the wall, doing nothing. He approached the young man and calmly said to him, “How much do you earn?” The young man was quite amazed that he was asked such a question by its M. D., he replied, none the less, “I earn Rs. 5000.00 a month, but sir can I ask you what made you asked this question?” Without answering, the MD took out his wallet and removed Rs. 15000.00 cash and gave it to the young man and said, “Around here I pay people for working, not for standing around looking pretty! Here is 3 months’ salary, now GET OUT and don’t come back”. This kind of attitude of management develops a fear of job security among the employees, thus whenever employee get any offer, whether suitable or unsuitable for them, they leave the job and join the new company, seeing this other employees follow the steps of their colleague.

Management themselves cannot reach to all its employees, thus HR people are held responsible for representing management on their behalf and solve the problems of employees thus the role of HR Department becomes very important, management takes all the decisions based on the information provided by HR Department. Thus, HR Department should be consists of honest and talented employees. In most of the organizations, HR Manager is only qualified and rest of staff is only kept to perform all the Administration related activities.

Wherever I have worked I have closely made a bond with all the employees removing negativity among the employees, asking them to provide suggestions, sitting with them for long, attending customers with them and going out in the market. I have closely studied the problems faced by the sales people, how hard they work to even sell a 5 Rupee pen. Sales people are called as the assets of an organization thus they are important and more important is to retain them. I have learnt that a routine change should be always there within organization, the change can be in the form of change in the organization policies, change in compensation, benefits and incentive policies, or taking out the staff for a picnic or organizing get-together.

Management personnel are senior professionals, it doesn’t mean for them to sit inside their cabins, making strategies and checking emails. It means, more of a responsibility, decision- making in terms of manpower, in terms of sales, or may be in terms of Accounts/Finances. New Managers make mistakes by immediately making strategies for sales or marketing, thus they do not understand the internal environment of their organization. I feel, first of all they should make their presence felt in the organization. To me, management is a path towards success but everybody knows that success doesn’t come easily.
