Everyone seems to be using Linked in at the moment. If you’re going to be on any social networking site, Linked in seems to be it. But, how do you use it to its maximum potential and get business from it? 

1.   Write your profile
Make sure you’ve set up your profile on Linked in. You need a bit about your business and what you do; a bit about you and who you are; your qualifications, background and education and finally a bit about your interests and hobbies. Social networking is about getting to know the person behind the business, so don’t be afraid to let your personality come across. A picture of you wouldn’t go amiss here too. 

2.   Get connected
Invite all your current contacts to join you on Linked in. You’ll be given the option to invite your contacts from your email package when you first start on Linked in, but if you’re already on there, just go to Add Connections at the top. You can also email people directly here and ask them to connect with you. 

3.   Connect to other people
Once you’ve started adding connections, Linked in will suggest other people that it thinks you might want to connect with too. You can see this on the right hand side of your home page under People you may know. Search through these regularly and keep connecting with new people. 

4.   Start communicating
Now you’re connected to people, start communicating with them and building that relationship. Contact people directly to find out more about them. It’s only when you communicate with them that you’ll find out whether there is anything you want to take further. 

5.   Tell people what you’re up to
Post an update (you can see this on your home page) on a regular basis – by regular once or more a day is best.

Keep Calm And Carry On

Running a business is a funny thing. One minute, you can be swamped with work and the next you’re so quiet and you can’t see where the next penny is coming from.  

When you’re desperate for new business, it’s likely that you’ll do tons and tons of marketing. You’ll really get off your back side and get out there as much as possible to get new business through the door.

You must let go of how desperate you feel and how much you need to get new business in through the door quickly – I know, easier said that done. It’s only when you do that you will start attracting business back to you.

1. You’re on stage. When you’re on the phone with a client, you’re playing the roles of a good-will ambassador, problem solver, public relations representative, and more. Whether you are having a good day or a bad day, your telephone call is a performance that should leave your client feeling positive about you.

2. Put energy in your voice. A good trick to remember is that when you are sitting during a phone call, your diaphragm is compressed. When you stand up and move around, you breathe more freely. You have more energy, which will come across in your voice.

3. Smile when you speak. The person you speak to won’t see the smile, but the warmth that comes from a smile will come across the phone line!

4. Monitor your voice quality. Do people often ask you to repeat what you just said? You may be mumbling or not enunciating clearly. A good telephone voice is clear and loud enough for people to hear, without sounding loud or shrill.

5. Prepare for your calls. Before an important call, plan what you will say, in writing if possible. This will lower your chances of getting sidetracked, or forgetting important items.

6. Stick to your point and keep it brief. Business people don’t have time for chatty conversations during the day. Monitor the voice of the person you are calling. If they sound hurried, get to the point, or ask when would be a good time to call back.

7. Have all the materials you need at hand. This includes a pen and paper, your calendar for setting appointments, and other information you have from previous contacts.

8. Don’t do other tasks when you’re on the phone. The person you’re talking to may hear you clicking on your keyboard if you’re multi-tasking during your conversation. Eating, drinking or chewing gum during a business conversation is unprofessional.

• Re-Confirm Date, Time, Place, # of attendees 24 hours prior to visit

There is always risk involved in living fully, and thereby choosing to be more fully alive and joyful human beings, but it is the way that leads to ‘wholeness’. Doing so involves breaking down the bars of our own self-imposed cage and daring to be more fully us, with all that this entails. It means getting out of our comfort zone and embracing what is outside of our present realm of experience – but always within a framework of wisdom and balance. Experiencing new things, interacting with people outside of those who are known and familiar to us, reading books which challenge us and extend our thinking, exploring what was previously unknown, are all a part of this pathway.

Our life’s journey should involve ongoing growth and lead us towards reaching our potential. Those who choose to live fully will undoubtedly experience more depths and heights, but they will come to know what life is all about in a far fuller way. Ultimately they will also come to know, understand and accept themselves. The rewards of doing so are worth the risks involved.

There is an enormous stress in not feeling free to be ourselves. If we are constantly trying to conform to others’ expectation of us the pressure of doing so will eventually get to us. People become inwardly fragmented when they are continually trying to present the ‘right front’ to this group, or that person etc. In the end they can feel that they have lost their own identity.
